South Florida Bracing for Irma

first_imgStorms winds extend 175 miles However, because Irma is so wide, having Hurricane winds extending 60 miles in each direction from the center, and tropical storm winds extending 175 miles, South Florida and other regions in Florida is expected to experience some impact if the storm tracks close to the east or west coast, and definitely if it comes on shoreThe NHC has indicated “Florida could begin feeling tropical storm force winds as early as Friday, with hurricane conditions moving across the state over the weekend.”Forecasters are calling for Irma to remain a dangerous Category 4 (winds between 135 – 156 mph) or Category 5 (winds over 156 mph) for the next three, “bur should weaken as it approaches Florida.” All of Florida in Irma’s forecast cone The so-called “cone of uncertainty” on Thursday included almost the entire Florida peninsula. Both the European and the US forecast models had the storm impacting Florida, but it’s uncertain if this impact will be to the west or east coast, or up the middle of the state.Unlike the threat of other hurricanes in past years, where South Florida residents waited until a storm was close to the region before preparing, with the approach of Irma residents have been very busy making preparations. On Thursday morning, the Publix supermarket in the Hammocks, West Kendall was crowded with shoppers stocking up on water, bread, tin food and other supplies. Jan Cortez a manager at the store said that since Monday, the staff has been busy restocking shelves. “Water, bread, and tin foods cannot stay on the shelf. But we are restocking regularly to meet the demand.” Great demand for gasoline There is also a rush on gas stations as motorists seek to fill up their thanks before the storm reaches South Florida. Several stations in South-West Miami was out of gas on Thursday morning, but their owners gave assurance they would have gas by later in the day.Yvon Rose, says she experienced Hurricane Andrew “first hand in 1992. My House here in West Kendall was demolished with winds that were some 160-miles per hour. This storm has winds of 185 miles per hour and could increase over the Florida Straits, so I am definitely spooked. This could be really bad if it comes at this force.” “Imagine hit by a car at 185 mph”Nineteen- year-old Morgan Prince has never experienced a hurricane. “However, I have seen the flood damages from Houston and I am scared by the force of Irma. Can you imagine being hit by a car going 185 miles per hour.”Officials at the National Hurricane Center on Thursday cited a slight shift of the storm to the right, or east, which would keep it over the warm ocean waters as it approaches South Florida. This could intensify the storm’s strength. This could also take the storm over or close to the east of Miami-Dade County. While Thursday’s track shift to the right could be bad news for South Florida’s densely developed east coast, NHC forecasters are still seeking a consistent pattern in the various forecast models. They say it’s still too early to base projections on any single model. Garth A. RoseSpooked by a hurricane that surged to a sustained maximum wind speed of 185 mph on Tuesday as it approached the Leeward Islands South Floridians are not taking any chances as Hurricane Irma moves west towards Florida. As of Thursday morning, Irma had passed over several Caribbean islands, including Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Martin, and Puerto Rico, It was also on a track to pass just north of Hispaniola home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. However, although the storm was moving west in the direction of Florida forecasters were still uncertain where in the state will be impacted.last_img read more

Record defeat for Windies in India

first_imgCaptain Jason Holder’s unbeaten half-century spared West Indies embarrassment, but they still suffered a record 224-run drubbing, as India registered their largest-ever victory over a Test-playing nation in the fourth One-Day International on Monday.Chasing a mammoth 378 at Brabourne Stadium after opener Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu blasted high quality hundreds, West Indies slumped to 20 for three in the sixth over and never recovered, bundled out in the end for 153 in the 37th over, to also record their heaviest-ever defeat to the Indians. At 77 for seven in the 19th over, the Caribbean side were staring at one of their lowest totals in five years and potentially their ninth total under 100, but Holder stroked a responsible unbeaten 54 to help his escape humiliation. The top order imploded with two needless run outs but the rest of the innings was wrecked by left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed who ripped out the middle order with three for 13 and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who polished off the tail with three for 42.last_img read more

Honduras Coach Blasts FIFA Over Punishing Playoff Schedule

first_imgHonduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto has criticised world football’s governing body, FIFA,  over the short period between matches in their two-legged World Cup qualifying playoff with Australia. Both teams face a cruel schedule with no direct flights between Honduras and Australia meaning that they have to face journeys of about 24 hours. The two matches of the play-off tie are just five days apart. While speaking on the schedule,  Pinto said: “It’s inhumane of Fifa to put the dates so close with such a long trip in between them.”The Honduran team will fly from San Pedro Sula to Los Angeles’ LAX airport for about seven hours before flying to Sydney for 15 hours. Including transfer time, the whole journey will take close to 24 hours and cover 10,866 miles.Related2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap (CONCACAF): Favourites US Miss Out; Panama QualifyOctober 11, 2017In “FIFA”Russia 2018 World Cup Playoff: Honduras, Australia Clash End In StalemateNovember 11, 2017In “FIFA”Jedinak Hattrick Sends Australia To The World CupNovember 15, 2017In “FIFA”last_img read more

Saturday’s Top European League Stats

first_imgThere were mixed results for teams as hostilities resumed in top European leagues on Saturday. There were plenty of goals in England and Spain while the excitement that was expected from the San Paolo didn’t exactly come through for the fans as Bayern Munich continued their resurgence under their new manager. Here are selected stats from action in the top European leaguesManchester City 3-0 BurnleyManchester City continued their impressive run of wins in the league as they put three unreplied goals past Burnley at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero scored the first goal of the game via a penalty to mark his return from injury after a ghastly accident and also to become the joint all-time highest goalscorer in the history of Manchester City, tied on 177 goals with Eric Brook.Huddersfield 2-1 Manchester UnitedIn one of the biggest upsets on Saturday, Huddersfield Town picked up a win against United in a game that once again saw Romelu Lukaku struggle against a newly-promoted side. Not only is this becoming an embarrassing trend for the player, the club also have a poor record against newly promoted sides, with just 3 wins in their last 6 trips to debutant clubs in the EPL. Lukaku has now failed to score in 18 of his last 25 games against newly promoted sides.Chelsea 4-2 WatfordAzpilicueta scored the all important winner for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a game that had everything. That was only his first goal of the season but having made 4 assists already this season – all to Alvaro Morata – he is now the defender who has contributed to the most number of goals in the Premier League this season.Swansea 1-2 Leicester CityMicheal Appleton started off as caretaker manager on a winning note at the Liberty stadium courtesy of an 11th-minute own goal by Swansea defender Federico Fernandez. That was the 11th own goal in the Premier League by a Swansea player since the start of the 2015/2016 season, more than twice as much as any other club in the English top flight.Napoli 0-0 Inter MilanNapoli hit a snag against unbeaten Internazionale at the San Paolo as they couldn’t find a way through on Saturday night. Inter Milan have been known for their inconsistency over the past couple of years, winning and losing games with high undulating frequency. Saturday’s draw away at Napoli was Inter Milan’s first draw in the Serie A in two years, their most recent league draw coming against Juventus in October of 2015.Hamburg 0-1 Bayern MunichBayern Munich continued their impressive positive run under Juup Heynckes with their 18th win in the last 19 games under the German – the only other game being a draw against Borussia Dortmund in 2013. Bayern also hit the woodwork twice in the match to take their tally of ‘woodwork targets’ to 7 this season, the most by any team in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season.RelatedPremier League Review: Aguero Hattrick Sends City Twelve Points ClearJanuary 20, 2018In “England”Premier League Review: United Close Gap On City After Burnley Draw; Auba Debut Goal, Ramsey Hattrick Dominate Big Arsenal Win Over EvertonFebruary 4, 2018In “England”Premier League Review: Toothless Chelsea Drop Points Again As Tottenham Close In On Top Four With Emphatic WinJanuary 14, 2018In “England”last_img read more
